    We have always had acronyms. Who knows when we started saying a.m. instead of ‘ante meridium’? During the industrial revolution of the 19th century, corporations found that writing space was limited on some railroad cars, and so names such as ‘American Telephone and Telegraph’ Company were shortened to AT&T. These were valid and practical adjustments which served a purpose. But when did we decide that we needed to start shortening the words we would use in our daily speech, just to save a few extra syllables?
